Major Areas of Interest at the Clark Advanced Learning Center
The CALC integrated
academic and applied technology programs meet the graduation
requirements for a college-ready high school diploma. In
addition to the many courses offered at the Clark Advanced
Learning Center, students are able to enrich their learning
experiences by taking advantage of the array of college
courses also available at the IRCC Chastain Campus. CALC
students develop advanced technology skills, and each CALC
student receives a laptop computer while enrolled in the
school.
The CALC curriculum is closely linked to the economic outlook
for Martin County, concentrating on technology-based programs
where there is a projected need. Specific program options include:

Information
Technology
Students prepare for a career in the field of microcomputer
networking and analysis. Courses are designed to lead
to industry certifications including, Microsoft Certified
Systems Engineer (MCSE), Cisco Certified Networking
Associate (CCNA), Certified Novell Associate (CNA),
or A+ and N+. |

Digital Media
This major focuses on the fundamentals of graphics
design technology needed for today's multimedia career
opportunities. Students work with state-of-the-art technology
in video and sound editing: web-page design, and digital
imaging, including 3-D graphics and animations. |

Entrepreneurship/E-Commerce
Online business opportunities generate billions of dollars
of income each year. This major introduces the student
to the world of electronic commerce and the basic principles
of starting a business. Courses are designed to teach
concepts, tools, strategies, technological issues, marketing,
and the leadership skills needed to compete in an e-commerce
society. |

Medical
Professions
Health care professionals are in demand. This major will
allow students to pursue several medical and health-related
careers including, but not limited to: biologist, chemist,
dietitian, nurse, and pharmacist. Pre-medical students
could also benefit from this program of study. |

"Eco"-Technology
Individuals choosing this major will be able to train
for in demand careers such as environmental scientist,
forestry or wildlife officer, marine scientist, surveyor,
or civil-engineer. Students at the CALC can begin a career
in this exciting and important field by taking pre-requisite
courses such as Introduction to Ecology and Oceanography. |

Customized, Multi-Disciplinary
Students have the ability to choose courses related to
a career interest other than those listed in the five
majors outlined above. Students may also choose to explore
courses in several of the major areas before selecting
a career path. Customized courses in this option are designed
with the student, parents, and a career counselor. |

Through
the CALC’s dual enrollment program, students enroll in
courses offered by IRCC, and earn both high school and college
credit for these classes. Students follow an individualized
program of study that is specific to their interests and goals.
Programs of study are developed by the student, an CALC educational
advisor, and the student's parent(s). |
